Ensure the Work You Fund Gets Done
Strong not-for-profits depend on strong Executive Directors.
The ED Academy was created to make Executive Director leadership possible, sustainable, and repeatable—strengthening both the leaders themselves and the organizations they guide.
Not-for-profits carry much of the responsibility for addressing our communities’ most complex social challenges. From poverty reduction and mental health support to arts, culture, sport, recreation, and community services, these organizations are essential to the well-being of Canadians.
Yet the sector is under increasing strain. Demand for services continues to grow while funding remains unpredictable, and workforce pressures continue to rise. Recent national research describes Canada’s charitable sector as reaching a tipping point, where rising demand, financial instability, and burnout across the workforce are converging to threaten the sector’s long-term sustainability (The Trilemma Facing Canada’s Charitable Sector, Carlton University).
At the centre of this pressure is the Executive Director.
In small and mid-sized not-for-profits, the Executive Director carries enormous responsibility: strategy, finance, governance, fundraising, staff leadership, and program oversight. Many step into the role with limited preparation and few places to turn for support.
When Executive Directors struggle, organizations struggle. When organizations struggle, the work funders care about is at risk—along with the essential services people in our communities rely on every day.
The ED Academy was created to address this challenge directly. Through a practical 12-month program, new Executive Directors gain the knowledge, tools, and peer support they need to lead strong organizations and build systems that sustain impact long into the future.
For funders and regional partners committed to strengthening the not-for-profit sector, ED Academy offers a high-impact solution: supporting leaders while strengthening the organizations and communities they serve.
“Participants are grateful to have a place for support and resources. Boards tell us how helpful it’s been to their organizations and funders, and the government sees it as essential.”

Strengthening the Sector Together
The ED Academy works with partners who care deeply about the strength and sustainability of the not-for-profit sector in their region.
Supporting the program strengthens both individual leaders and the broader not-for-profit ecosystem. By investing in Executive Directors early in their tenure, partners help organizations build the leadership capacity, systems, and peer connections that allow them to thrive.
Together,
this work leads to:
Stronger, more stable organizations
Executive Directors leave with practical systems that strengthen governance, planning, and financial management. Through the Peace of Mind Planning process, participants develop core organizational blueprints such as an Annual Operating Plan, Annual Budget, Board Calendar, and ED Manual. These tools bring clarity to day-to-day leadership while protecting critical organizational knowledge during future leadership transitions.
Greater confidence in organizational stability
When leaders have the tools, support, and peer network they need, organizations are better equipped to deliver on their missions and sustain impact in their communities.
A more professional and resilient sector
The ED Academy builds shared knowledge, practices, and expectations across participating organizations. Over time, this creates greater consistency in how not-for-profits plan, govern, and operate.
Stronger leadership pipelines and smoother transitions
Across the sector, long-time Executive Directors are retiring while new leaders step into complex roles with little preparation. The ED Academy supports leaders early in their tenure, helping them succeed in the role and strengthening organizational continuity through periods of leadership change.
Sector-wide leadership connections
Participants build a trusted network of peers across organizations. These relationships reduce isolation, encourage collaboration, and strengthen the sector’s ability to solve problems together.
Capacity building at scale
Rather than supporting leaders one at a time, the ED Academy allows partners to strengthen multiple organizations simultaneously. This creates broad sector impact while ensuring leaders receive consistent training, tools, and support.
High impact with minimal lift
The ED Academy team handles curriculum design, facilitation, coaching, and program delivery. Partners help convene and support a regional cohort of leaders, making it a powerful way to invest in the sector without having to build a program from scratch.
What Makes the ED Academy Different
Many leadership programs draw on models from the business world or are designed for aspiring leaders still preparing for the role. The ED Academy is different.
It was built specifically for current Executive Directors, recognizing the unique realities of leading in the not-for-profit sector.
The program focuses on both the leader and the organization. Participants strengthen their leadership skills while also building the systems and structures their organizations need to thrive.
What makes the ED Academy distinctive:
Designed for the not-for-profit sector
The program is grounded in the realities of not-for-profit leadership, including governance, community accountability, funding structures, and mission-driven work.
Built for current Executive Directors
Participants are actively leading organizations. The learning is immediately applicable to the challenges they are facing right now.
Practical and timely
The curriculum responds to the real demands of the role. Whether leaders are navigating audit preparation, governance challenges, or funding opportunities, the tools and training are delivered when they matter most.
Focused on organizational infrastructure
Participants leave with concrete systems and plans that strengthen their organizations long after the program ends.
Trauma-informed and equity-grounded
The program recognizes the emotional and relational realities of not-for-profit leadership and creates space for thoughtful, inclusive leadership practice.
“The ED Academy has been a great help to me as a new leader in the sector. I love the group conversations, the tools and resources, and the opportunity to meet with the facilitator on a regular basis. I feel really supported."
